playing favorites

kiel: just chugging along
kie: the future home of a fluorescence plate reader
kio: the whirrrr of the vacufuge. i tell ya, this lab is riddled with background noise.

alex sometimes asks me a serious of questions starting with "what's your favorite ..." and fills in the ellipsis with color, football team, food, etc.

how come we have to have favorite things? can't we just like things and not like other things? example: if i had to pick one, my favorite color would be orange. but i also like purple. and green and blue have their place too. i mean, maybe my favorite color is white because i like all the colors. okay that is lame.

i wonder why we have to have favorites. actually, now that i think of it you usually see favorite-type stuff with kids e.g. sports illustrated for kids bios or fansites that show players' favorite food, music, etc. (did you know that derek jeter's favorite color is blue? holy shit!). maybe there's a need to have something in common with people you like. (incidentally, frank sinatra's favorite color is orange. apparently we have something else in common.)

personally i don't have many favorites. i like lots of different foods, lots of different music, lots of different colors, and lots of different beers. my preference tends to vary based on the situation.

also, i happen to like two different football teams, one in the afc and one in the nfc. i figured if they ever played each other i would be in quite the pickle. they happened to meet in the super bowl this year, and one of them won. frankly, going into the game i was pretty ambivalent (it's not like football consumes my life to begin with) and rooting for whichever team won me money from the pools i was in. whatever, they're both good teams, and they'll likely have great seasons next year, too. sports is entertainment.

anyway, enough about favorites. i haven't updated in a while because i spent about 2 weeks doing absolutely nothing. i did absolutely nothing and it was everything i thought it could be.

i'm going to be a groomsman in neal (aka "the greatest guy ever")'s wedding. yup, he's getting married and i'll be right there. it's pretty cool. again on the subject of playing favorites, if/when i actually do get married i have no idea how i will pick my groomsmen. i mean, i have lots of friends that i like, but i can't have a wedding party of 20 guys and 20 girls. well, hopefully that won't come up for a LONG TIME.
interestingly, the office of neal's best man (a fellow weiser teacher) is room 334, same as my house number.

ed: this is the same "greatest guy ever" that conveniently forgot to tell me that he wanted me to give a speech at his reception until the entrance of the bridal party. we are so even, neal. - 9/5/06
