what IS going on?

kie: olin hall of chemical engineering
kiel: godotian (is that a word?)
kio: some hold music................THANK YOU FOR HOLDING!....hold music....

i am currently in the office, with the speakerphone on, holding for NYSEG. i called them at about 4:00, and it's 4:30 now. see, the lady that moved out of our place hasn't cancelled the electricity and gas yet (you know, for the whole month we've been living there), and i figured that since we just bought a whole bunch of chicken at wegman's yesterday, it would be good to have a working fridge. so, i need some juice.

since friday, collegetown has been INUNDATED with students. compared to the academic year, ithaca is pretty deserted in the summer. classes start on thursday (i think? maybe i should look into this...) so everybody's come rushing back. this likely explains the long wait time for nyseg.

the streets are lined with ford explorers and plenty of higher brand SUVs, the stores are packed with lost parents and kids that are embarassed by them, and wal-mart is completely out of lamps. people crowd around to look at the streetside campus maps like they're looking at the mona lisa in the louvre.

in response to this (i think?) a girl in the street last week stopped me on my way to get a bagel and said
"excuse me, do you know what's going on?" clearly i didn't because i responded "um, something's going on?"

but let that be a lesson to you all: THIS DUDE LOOKS LIKE HE KNOWS WHAT'S GOING ON.

========================
epilogue: nyseg answered pretty much right after i typed "4:30 now". while the wait was long, the guy was quite cheerful and rather expedient in handling my call. kudos to you, nyseg man. your rich baritone will echo in my dreams.
