Sarah : hey hot stuff
Sarah : changed your donut

Sarah : uh
Sarah : ate a donut
Sarah : or a doughnut
resnetstud: set a beaker of ethanol on fire!!

Sarah : i'm guessing you weren't supposed to do that
resnetstud: no
Sarah : HOW did you do that?
resnetstud: ok so when you're plating bacteria
resnetstud: you squirt a little bit of broth on the plate
resnetstud: then spread it around with this glass tube
resnetstud: then dip the tube in ethanol
resnetstud: to kill the cells on it
resnetstud: then flame it
resnetstud: then repeat
resnetstud: well
resnetstud: i dipped too soon after flaming it



ed: this is actually quite commonplace, but at the time i freaked out about it. i actually started filling the beaker with water, until the water started to boil. then i put it in the sink until it went out. what you're supposed to do is just cover the flame with your lab notebook. -9/5/06
